چکیده

The general thermodynamic analysis of the quantum vacuum, which is based on our knowledge of the vacua in condensed-matter systems, is consistent with the Einstein earlier view on the cosmological constant. In the equilibrium Universes the value of the cosmological constant is regulated by matter. In the empty Universe, the vacuum energy is exactly zero, λ = 0. The huge contribution of the zero point motion of the quantum fields to the vacuum energy is exactly cancelled by the higher-energy degrees of freedom of the quantum vacuum. In the equilibrium Universes homogeneously filled by matter, the vacuum is disturbed, and density of the vacuum energy becomes proportional to the energy density of matter, λ = ρvac ∼ ρmatter. This consideration applies to any equilibrium vacuum irrespective of whether the vacuum is false or true, and is valid both in the Einstein general theory of relativity and within the special theory of relativity, i.e. in the world without gravity. The present paper seeks to construct a quantum theory of the cosmological constant in which its presently observed very small value emerges naturally. Large scale cosmological observations over the past decade (see references cited in [1], and [2-4]) have provided data which are in accord with the simplest cosmological model LCDM (Λ + Cold Dark Matter) [4-7]. This model is governed by the homog...

A quantum field theory formalism is reviewed that leads to a selfconsistent, finite quantum gravity, Yang-Mills and Higgs theory, which is unitary and gauge invariant to all orders of perturbation theory. The gauge hierarchy problem is solved due to the exponential damping of the Higgs self-energy loop graph for energies greater than a scale ΛH ≤ 1 TeV. The cosmological constant problem is solv...

We use the Einstein energy-momentum complex to calculate the energy distribution of static plane-symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in 3+1 dimensions with asymptotic anti-de Sitter behavior. These are expressed in terms of the ADM mass density, charge density and cosmological constant.

A simple description of the vacuum energy (cosmological constant) problem for non-experts is presented. Basic features of cosmology with non-zero vacuum energy are discussed. The astronomical data which indicate that the universe is filled with an anti-gravitating state of matter are described. The mechanisms which may lead to cancellation of almost infinite vacuum energy down to the astronomic...
